Good Health means good Mental Health

Good health means good Mental Health and yet there is a stigma surrounding Mental Illness and therapy. If you broke your leg you would not “Just walk it off.” Like wise if you suffer from Anxiety or Depression you can’t just “Get over it.” If you broke your leg you would go to a doctor, get x-rays, a cast, crutches and eventually physical therapy. Mental Illnesses are treated the same. An intake or assessment is much like getting x-rays. Therapy is like the cast, surrounding you and supporting you as you heal. Social supports are like crutches, helping you maintain a healthy lifestyle while healing. Learning to use the coping skills acquired in therapy in real life situations is much like physical therapy. We need to acknowledge the importance of taking care of our minds is as equally important as taking care of our bodies.
